  2. New United NewsOrg War on Water By Arthur Kenna Staff Writer Archibald, Yar, Centauri Blue sparks arc between the grounding plates attached to the outside of most buildings in Archibald, the extreme low humidity making static buildup and discharge a real hazard to those who walk the dusty streets here. Even though the atmosphere on Yar is technically breathable, you see few inhabitants these day who go outside without protection. The air is so dry that even a short walk can result in cracked lips, nose bleeds, itchy eyes and irritated throats. Sweat evaporates as quickly as it can form. It seems almost like an act of defiance that Captain Jemma Viernes of the Archibald Protection Force talks to the reporters assembled outside the main headquarters without a mask. She is here to tout the results of a sting operation that culminated in the arrest of three suspected smugglers. The latest in an ongoing effort to curtail a growing and problematic black market on Yar, the sting resulted in the single largest seizure of contraband to date, ninety-six thousand kiloliters of clean, potable water. Now in its seventh year, the current drought on Yar is by far the longest on record for the planet. Already an arid world covered in deserts, the effects of the drought have been devastating for the small towns and settlements that dot the surface. The planet’s infamous Red Desert is estimated to have expanded by 23% since 2940. What was already considered a hard life has become all the more difficult as available water supplies dwindle. One local resident, Frosino ‘Sunny’ Vogan, who runs a ‘Carry-All’ shop near Hester Flats, summed up the situation by saying, “No one who chooses to live here’s expecting an easy life, but this? This is no kind of life at all.” Like many though, even with these harsh conditions, Vogan has no plans on leaving the planet. “You pour as much blood and sweat into the land as I have, you start to feel a part of it.” In response to the ongoing problem, the leadership council declared a State of Emergency in 2941 and enacted several strict regulations for water use and reclamation. These regulations not only affected the population, but the mining industry as well, which depends on water for many common extraction practices. Despite these measures and humanitarian aid provided by the Empire, the water reserves on Yar continue to fall well below the standards set by the UEE for per-person water consumption with regards to drinking and sanitation. The moisture collectors and grey water processors just have not been able to keep up with even the reduced demand owing to the severity of the drought. To make up the difference in supply, the government began to significantly increase its procurement of off-world water resources. However, as the private sector began to compete for those same shipments in the water markets, prices soon skyrocketed. With its budget already stretched, the government could not compete and soon the majority of the water making its way to the world was sold directly to wealthier individuals or corporations. A majority of the inhabitants found themselves unable to afford the high market prices and unable to depend on the government to provide for them. Though there were rules which limited how much water people could consume, the booming private market made exact usage statistics extremely difficult to track. As the drought continued and conditions worsened, prices and demand only increased. Even though the number of water haulers making deliveries to the planet quadrupled by 2944, it was not enough to tame the runaway market. Desperate to restore balance and curtail the growing drought-related death toll, the council passed a new ordinance outlawing the private sale of water on Yar. Announcing the new measures, council member Keisha Redd said, “the good of all people must come before any one individual. If we are to survive this, we must do so together.” Despite protests, at 00:00 SET on May 25th, 2946, Executive Council Order B-14-26 went into effect. Selling water had now become illegal on Yar. Unfortunately, the new regulations have not had the desired effect. As the council locked in a new lower price at which it was willing to purchase water, many of the haulers and traders left the marketplace, unsatisfied with slimmer profit margins. With less water coming to the planet, the authorities enacted tighter consumption restrictions at the start of 2947 and use was capped at the bare minimum. Companies who rely on water for their operations are forced to compete for limited water-use licenses with only sparse amounts available every quarter. Many struggle to subsist on the resources the council can provide, while those with the means to do so have turned to a new fount — the water black market. An anonymous source who operates a mine near the southern Prosolo border says, “about eight months ago I was contacted by a broker who said she could get my tanks back up to the levels they were before Order 26 went into effect. Costs twice as much as it did before they passed the damn law, but what else can you do? To get one of those official licenses you have to be extremely lucky or know the right people. Or better yet, both.” Recent estimates from the Archibald Protection Force state that nearly a third of the total current water on Yar has been transported there illegally. In an attempt to curtail the growing black market, the last few months have seen heightened scans at all orbital weigh stations, multiple raids, and dozens of arrests. The council has even been looking to add a tracer to its water supplies to help identify illegal sources. Despite the time and effort spent shutting down the trade, it seems like there is no end in sight. Illegal water is still pouring into Yar as smugglers seek to take advantage of the situation. If the current trends continue, the council could be on the verge of waging open war against its population as the need for water continues to make outlaws out of everyday people. However, a new wrinkle has emerged. One of the alleged smugglers arrested this week, Kira Henderson, is contesting the charges placed against her by claiming that water is a basic Human right under the UEE’s Common Laws and that the officials on Yar did not have the legal standing to outlaw its sale to the public in the first place. Many across the world have embraced Henderson’s interpretation and organized formal protests in Archibald and beyond to support her. A hearing has been scheduled for later this month and its outcome could have major ramifications, not only for Yar, but the Empire as a whole. Przeczytaj całość

  5. Q&A: Consolidated Outland Pioneer Greetings Citizens! Since the introduction of the Hull Series back in April 2015, every new concept ship reveal has had an accompanying Q&A post, where we spend a couple days collecting questions from you, pass those on to the relevant ship designer, and provide you the best answers we have available at that time. With the recent addition of Spectrum, we can now allow you to add your vote to the questions you most want to see answered. The questions included below are a combination of those that received the most votes, similar questions that were merged into a single instance, and those we felt we could comfortably answer at this stage in the Pioneer’s development. In addition to the usual text Q&A, the design team responsible for the Pioneer also held a panel at last week’s CitizenCon 2947 event where they spent an hour discussing the ship and its functionality. You can review that panel in the video embedded below. Now that the ship is concept complete, it will enter our development pipeline where many of the answers you see below will be fleshed out, and those missing will be determined and implemented. While it will still be some time before we see the Pioneer in game, we hope you’re as excited as we are as the game expands with the further development of Origin ships in the Star Citizen universe. As always, a special thanks to John Crewe, Todd Papy, Kirk Tome, Ben Lesnick and Steven Kam for their help in answering your questions. Let’s get to it. -DL How large can an outpost be? An outpost will have around the same footprint we have currently shown in the game, which is 48x x 48d x 5h (meters). We view this as starting a small location for colonization, very similar to constructing a small research facility in Antarctica. Can the Pioneer build hangars to store ships in our bases? Currently we are looking at the player’s building basic landing pads for ships. At this point in time it’s probably way too early to be expecting your outposts to work anything like Port Olisar or a Revel & York or Self-Land facility. While you can land and leave a ship on an outpost landing pad, the broader question of persistent “ship storage” is a nuanced and complex technical affair, as you have already seen from everything that’s already involved in requesting, replacing, spawning, despawning, and landing ships in places like Port Olisar. Doing even any subset of these things at a player outpost location, where available layout, structures, and systems are up to the player instead of a design team, would be very tricky to say the least. Should we come up with a good way to handle it someday, we’ll let you know. Can we use the Pioneer to build outposts on asteroids? We are not opposed to the idea. However it will depend on a few different factors that still need to be decided: the size of the asteroid, what we do with the voxel tech and if the surface area of the asteroid is smooth enough to build. Can placed outposts be moved by the Pioneer? Yes, however they need to be disassembled and then rebuilt in the new location rather than being picked up and moved whole. The Pioneer can manage this process (though collecting additional resources may be necessary.) Can the Pioneer build space stations? No, this ship was built with the purpose of colonizing planets. Terrestrial construction and terrestrial structures have different needs from space stations. What size is the Pioneer claim license included in the package? It will depend on the texel density of our resource map, we want to make sure the claim is at least 1×1 pixel on that map. The initial educated guess is somewhere between 4×4km to 8×8km. Pretty large chunk of land that will give players multiple construction sites. The land claim system will be important beyond Pioneer construction. Land claims will prevent other players from building in your territory and will offer different options relevant to gameplay (such as giving you surface rights, for pure construction, versus mineral rights that would include mining.) We know that there are concerns that land claims could theoretically be abused (situations such as buying up the area outside a major city or using outposts to block important areas); rest assured that the claim system is being developed to prevent these situations from being possible. Will we need to move the Pioneer each time we want to put a new module? When the manufacturing process is complete the ship moves the outpost forward and places it in the specified location. If that location can’t have any other items placed there safely, then the pilot will need to move the Pioneer’s position. Can the Pioneer build anti-air structures that have weapons such as missiles to defend our bases? The Pioneer performs fully contained modular outpost construction on-site. It creates modular structures, foundation, things like that. As Silas Koerner points out, this is pretty revolutionary as far as ship capabilities go. The Pioneer isn’t a weapons manufacturing plant, repair shop, or furniture store, however – External improvements like static defenses are among the concepts we are developing for outpost add-ons. Any external add-on structures will be bought at a store rather like ship or personal equipment and then can be placed when you put down the outpost or added on later. Can Pioneer build structures larger than its internal space? The most obvious example of this right now is the landing pads. We have yet to decide exactly how we will allow the player to build the landing pads, but it will probably be in sections. If a player wants to build an outpost and use it only for storage, that is their choice but it will not be bigger than the structure’s footprint stated above. What happens to outposts built with the Pioneer when the player who created them is logged out of the game? Let’s just say this direct and up front for those of you who worry about these things: Yes, the outpost and their contents are persistent, so they can be attacked and looted. Offline security will have a lot to do with your “neighborhood”, just as you would depend on local authorities to varying degrees to protect your house, apartment, trailer, etc. in real life when you are not home. Among other things, that means that while other actors in the game universe, including local law enforcement, militia, UEE, or whoever else is tasked with general security in that region, will react to attacks on privately-held outposts, it will depend on AI location and travel time to outpost. Sometimes there will be a quick response and other times it will be delayed, so the players are highly encouraged to protect their outpost/investment by placing defenses and hiring personal security. The less hospitable an area in which you set up your outpost, the more responsibility you will have for your own safety. Can the Pioneer use the refined material made by the Orion (or any other ship)? Yes, as long as what you are building uses that particular resource. Remember that there are different types of ores, metals and other substances used in construction. Will the Pioneer have any other functionality/career options beside outpost manufacturing? No, this will be updated to list as Heavy Construction to reflect the actual role of the Pioneer. Can the Pioneer make the ‘add ons’ like solar panels, landing pads, generators and the like or do they have to be purchased separately? These would be purchased already fabricated and added to the outpost. See also our answer regarding static defenses above. Is it possible for Pioneer to build outposts on rough terrain like slopes or does the ground have to be flat? The ground will need to be flat enough to land the ship safely, it doesn’t need to be perfectly flat but you will not be able to place an outpost on particularly rough terrain. Will the Pioneer be able to build tall buildings or stackable modules? There are no plans for double decker outposts. That said, we’re drawing up enough options for the modular outposts and various add-ons that we think you’ll have a lot of fun with them even without crazy module stacking. How much time does it take to deploy an outpost? No specific time estimate right now, but we do view it as a major time investment. You’re setting up a persistent, maintainable installation that can be as big or bigger than most ships. The amount of time will scale with the size of the outpost. Will we be able to spawn ships at our outpost? There are no plans for this right now; ships available at an outpost must be brought there first. See also our answer regarding ship storage above. The Pioneer contains 3 utility slots. Can it serve any other purpose than building planetary bases? If yes, what can it do? These were listed in error. The Pioneer is not equipped with utility slots, instead being focused solely on the very dedicated task of outpost construction. Przeczytaj całość

  9. Greetings, Xenolinguists in training. In the interest of facilitating cross-species understanding, the UEE Diplomatic Corps’ Office of Xenolinguistic Protocol and the Xi’an Imperial Academy have prepared a broad overview of the Xi’an Language for Human study. This document, while not comprehensive, is meant to provide a solid grounding in the basics of Xi’an language and culture. After mastering this overview, you will not only gain understanding of how to construct Xi’an phrases and sentences, you will also begin to understand the nuances of Xi’an culture and protocol. This understanding will be key on your journey towards obtaining fluency in Xi’an Language (uo’aXy’an). Xi’an Language Xi’an Language, or uo’aXy’an in Standard Romanized Xi’an (SRX), is a tonal language with vowel and consonant sounds that will be familiar to many Humans. Those who have a background in other tonal languages may have an easier time mastering uo’aXy’an than Humans without similar backgrounds. However, any spoken language can be mastered by those willing to put in the effort to learn. There are many dialects of uo’aXy’an. The SaoX’yan (Xi’an Empire) spans multiple systems, and has developed unique slang, tonal quirks, and pronunciation differences that are not understandable to the untrained human ear. Knowledge in Proper Xi’an (uo’a e thle’a) provides the best baseline to comprehending many Xi’an dialects. The Service Dialect (uo’a se Hyath), another popular permutation of uo’aXy’an, breaks some of the rules of uo’a e thle’a, while still maintaining its status as a Xi’an language. You will see this from time to time in your studies. For now, we will focus on attaining familiarity with uo’a e thle’a. Language Lessons in This Document The Full Xi’an Alphabet Introduction to Standard Romanized Xi’an Pronunciation Guides Parts of Speech Relational Particles Formal Versus Informal Language Basic Sentence Construction And more Xi’an Culture True language mastery can only be obtained with thorough study and experience in the culture from which the language originated. With that in mind, many common pitfalls Humans face when conversing with our Xi’an allies have been covered in this document. For example, it is important to use polite speech while conversing with an unfamiliar Xi’an, but it is equally important to avoid communicating a feeling of artifice (ngiyoching). Once you’re close enough with a Xi’an, it is similarly important to become comfortable with casual language. But how do you know when you’ve reached that level of familiarity? What clues do you look for? What if you make a mistake? All these questions will be addressed, providing you with the tools you need to succeed when you interact with the Xi’an. Cultural Lessons in this Document Xi’an Family Structure Xi’an Relationships An Overview of Xi’an Colors Personal Names versus Family Names Common Societal Titles How to Shop in the Xi’an Empire Notes on Xi’an Religions And more A Strong Foundation Xi’an culture, just like human culture, is complex enough that it isn’t easy to cover in a single document. If it were comprehensive, it would span several volumes and take years of constant study and practice to understand. This overview, therefore, is not complete. But it does represent a first step into a larger universe of understanding. As Professor Tai puts it in his letter: yanlēkol — Best wishes for your studies. 10. Lars Gonall: Welcome to the hell pit, or as it’s more commonly known, Spectrum Spectator. I’m Lars Gonall and with me as always is my spectrum life-partner Daisy Wences. For those of you at home wondering why I’m glistening like a dew-kissed lawn, the environment systems in our building decided to start freaking out today and while they claim it’s safe for us to go ahead and record the show, it is stupid hot in our studio right now. Daisy Wences: And here I thought that healthy glow was because you saw our special guest backstage. Lars: I would normally snark back at this juncture, but I’m pretty sure I’m sweating out large portions of my brain function. I don’t know how you still look so put together. Daisy: I grew up on Vosca. This is basically sweater weather for me. Lars: Guess that explains why you had a steaming bowl of kacho for lunch. Daisy: Damn straight. Best thing to eat on a hot day is spicy soup. My grandfather taught me that. The more you sweat, the more it can evaporate and cool you off. Lars: Spectrum Spectator, come for the reviews, stay for the folksy wisdom. Daisy: Thanks for reminding me that we should probably actually do some reviewing. On today’s Spectrum Spectator, we turn our focus entirely towards the recent spate of documentaries and reality shows that premiered this month. Lars: Note that we didn’t set out to do a theme show, but there was such a glut of quality recently it just worked out that way. You wanna go first, Daisy, so I can chug this liter of hydro-gel? Daisy: And maybe we can get a towel for you. With how quickly that puddle of sweat is growing, I think electrocution is as likely to kill you as overheating at this point. Lars: Spectrum Spectator, come for the reviews, stay for the death pool. Daisy: Speaking of things that refuse to die, I had the pleasure of watching One World at a Time: An Inquiry into Project Archangel, a sweeping epic that explores in detail the history of the Synthworld from its earliest conception to its current controversial status. Just like the artificial planet itself, One World is quite daunting in size. Clocking in at over thirteen hours long, the documentary does take some significant time investment, but the choice of directors Cambio Astley and Viktoria Hampton to focus on the people actually building the world, rather than the typical political drama, give the piece a vitality that’s hard not to get caught up in. These are people who have given their lives to make the impossible a reality, and their passion for the project is captivating. Even more impressive may be just how balanced the whole vid feels. There’s very little sugarcoating going on. Engineers discuss missteps. Project leads candidly talk about mistakes. During one of the standout moments in the piece, Imperator Salehi admits to mishandling how the initial scheduling and financing needs were presented to the public. Combine all those exclusive interviews with gorgeous shots of the construction site itself and an almost lyrical editing style, and you really get a sense of why so many people believe in the Synthworld dream. Lars: I feel like I’ve seen half of it already, just thanks to the sheer volume of clips that have been passed around. Daisy: And to be fair, I think that’s how most people are going to wind up watching it. Lars: It’s actually how I wound up watching the documentary Bullet Catcher. A bunch of people had forwarded me clips of some of the metalworking sequences and I was like, okay, I’m in. Normally, I’m not a huge fan of these artisan and craftsmen-type vids, but there was something about mixing in the seedy underworld of Spider that just did it for me. Daisy: This was actually shot by an outlaw, right? Lars: Yeah, Marviana ‘Deadeye’ Gerhart. Turns out she’s as good at aiming a camera as she is a gun. Which from the Advocacy report I looked up, she is very good at. The whole piece is composed of these static shots from unique perspectives while the main subject, Three-Fingered Jack, narrates the story of his life crafting and repairing armor for the worst of the worst. There’s this stark contrast between the beautiful artistry in what he’s creating, and some of the upsetting stories he shares about his time on Spider. And what was really interesting is that even though you see him throughout, you never actually see him talk. There’s no standard cut away to an interview. While that seems bizarre, it ends up working really well and sort of makes it feel like you’re inside Jack’s head. Later on, I learned that not only was this an artistic choice but also a practical one. Turns out that since Jack is never actually identified as the speaker, there’s some plausible deniability. It was the only way he would agree to be part of the project. Daisy: I almost had the same thing written into my contract when I started here. Lars: That would have been the smart way to go. Your reputation is pretty much ruined. Daisy: It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this film when award season rolls around. Lars: Yeah. Pretty much all of the people who worked on it would be arrested if they’re seen in the UEE. I heard that the distributor, Golden Path, was even contacted by the Advocacy for questioning. Daisy: Speaking of intense invasive questioning, what do you say to bringing out our guest? Lars: I almost hate to do it to him since the green room has air conditioning, but I figure if anyone can face uncomfortable environmental conditions it’s him. Daisy: You may know him from his recent stint on the sixth season of the hit reality show, Frontier Colony; please join me in welcoming Naizen Blunk. Lars: Great to have you on Spectrum Spectator, Naizen. Naizen Blunk: Thanks so much for having me on. Daisy: Of course, we are huge fans of yours. It was heartbreaking when you had to leave the colony in last week’s episode. Naizen: It was pretty heartbreaking for me too. I’ve been wanting to be on Frontier Colony since it first premiered, so to have to leave four weeks in was really disappointing. Lars: I’ve been dying to hear your take on the whole “Carrot Incident.” Naizen: Once I stopped being worried that I was dying, I was pretty embarrassed about the whole thing. Here I’m supposed to be the colony’s farming expert, and I nearly poison everyone with the first crop that I grow. I guess I’m just thankful that no one else ate the carrots before I did. Daisy: It was so funny the way they wound up editing that scene of you trying it for the first time. You looked so happy, but the music suddenly got sinister. It was the most afraid of a carrot I’ve ever been. Lars: And so it turned out that the moon’s soil was toxic? Naizen: Yup. But only when mixed with water. That’s why none of my initial scans showed anything. If there was one silver lining to this whole thing it’s that they’re actually talking about changing the way soil sampling is done so that hopefully this sort of thing will be less likely to happen in the future. Lars: When did you know that you were off the show? Naizen: As soon as they told me that I was too sick to be treated at the outpost. The producers are pretty serious about preserving the purity of the colony. When they say no outside contact, they mean it. After they drop you off, you’re on your own. Daisy: So does that mean that you have no idea what happens on the episode premiering today? Naizen: Yup. After I was emergency lifted to the hospital, I wasn’t allowed contact with any of the colonists or show staff, so I’ll be watching just like all of you. All I know is that they’re doing that special tie in with the Consolidated Outland’s new colony ship, the Pioneer. Lars: We have to take a quick break, but when we come back, I definitely want to hear your predictions. Daisy: Yeah, what do you think is going to happen with Clair and Aiden? Lars: And which module do you think the colonists are going to choose to add with the Pioneer? Naizen: Wait … Clair and Aiden? Are they a thing? Daisy: Okay. We definitely have a lot more to discuss. Lars: Stay right there for more when Spectrum Spectator returns. Przeczytaj całość

  16. A Quick Guide to SRX Because the UEE has a long history of contact with the Xi’an, and because that history was not always based on freely flowing cultural exchange, Xi’an words have ended up spelled many different ways when written in the Roman alphabet. For example, even the name Xi’an itself is commonly spelled Xi’An with an intermittent capitalized “A” in many contexts. This occurred due to misconceptions about Xi’an writing in early centuries. We also commonly spell the Xi’an planet name Ka’ua as Cáwa based on how non-Xi’an speakers heard it being pronounced centuries ago. The Xi’an Emperor’s family line (technically: Kr.ē) is spelled Kray in everyday Standard. The Xi’an given names U.al, R.ēth, and S.oam are often spelled as Wal, Rayth, and Soahm respectively. These spellings are not incorrect and spelling names in this way is not offensive to the Xi’an, but this humanized way of writing their language fails to account for the fact that Xi’an is pitch-based and that pitch is important. Enter SRX (Standard Romanized Xi’an): a notation system developed collaboratively between the UEE Diplomatic Corps Office of Xenolinguistic Protocol (DC OxLP) and The Xi’an Imperial Academy. You have likely already noticed interstitial periods (example: Kr.ē) and interstitial apostrophes (as in: Xi’an) and possibly even ‘orphaned’ quotation marks (e.g.: Li”) when encountering SRX. These punctuation marks were selected from the regular human repertoire of symbols because they roughly parallel the annotative diacritics that the Xi’an use in their native orthography (writing system). The Xi’an pitch system will be explained in great deal at a later date. For now, we’ve created this guide so you don’t feel totally lost when reading the Xi’an Dictionary. A human model for Xi’an pitch A Guide to Pitch Markers in SRX naithlūn : deep understanding and appreciation for something : example of neutral pitch Both syllables of this word are in a completely neutral pitch. Neither receives more stress or emphasis. NAI (as in knife minus the ‘F’ sound at the end) + THLŪN (in which the ŪN is pronounced much like the ‘OON’ in croon.) The THL is considered to be a single sound to the Xi’an and we produce it as a contact cluster when we say WITH LOVE very rapidly. Keep your voice very neutral and relaxed when saying naithlūn and give both syllables the same mid-range, neutral pitch. Note that there are no periods or apostrophes present tyo’ma : culture : example of falling pitch This is the most common pitch pattern in the language, especially for two-syllable words. TYO (one syllable in which you should treat TY as a consonant cluster) is at a medium high pitch and MA falls past neutral to a medium low pitch. Most humans who do not already speak a pitch-based language will hear this as the TYO being stressed. The single apostrophe signals that the pitch drops on MA. m.oa : all, total, every : example of low pitch This pitch pattern with a singe interstitial period indicates that the pitch is low. M.OA is pronounced as a single syllable, very much like the extinct terrestrial bird but with the voice kept equally low on both the O and the A, which linguists count as a diphthong. The period that indicates low pitch is typically placed after the consonant if one is present, or before the vowel if there is no consonant. A good example of this is the grammatical particle .U that marks words or phrases that provide context for verbal constructs. Li” : one’s ‘path’ as life is lived : example of high pitch This pitch pattern with a singe appended double quote (”) indicates that the pitch is high. This marking occurs on single syllable words and on the second syllable when the pitch rises to high. Most rising patterns do not rise all the way to high, but in certain words it is important to “go all the way up” and when that is the case the high pitch marker is used. It’s important to note that many inherently high-pitch words like Li” lose their formal high pitch when they combine in falling patters. This is the case in Li’t.oua, for example. This is the SRX spelling of the Xi’an “religious” tradition that you may know commonly spelled in the UEE as Li’tova or Litòva. In this word the initial LI syllable occurs at only a mid-high pitch. Inherently high-pitched syllables are much more likely to retain high pitch when they occur as the very last syllable in a compound word. For example n.aiLi”, (“minor enlightenment” from the Li’tova tradition). In this word, NAI is at a mid-low pitch or even neutral pitch and “pops up” all the way into the high range on LI. This is a rise-to-high pattern and it is fairly common in the language. y.a’u : this (indicating this thing) : example of normal rising pitch This pitch pattern is also common in Xi’an, but somewhat less so than the falling pattern. It uses both a dot (period) and an apostrophe to show that the first syllable is lower in pitch than the second. It is important to note that this first period forms a pair with the apostrophe that follows it. They should be read together. And, the YA syllable is not necessarily technically low as you might guess. In fact, it is only mid-low. Similarly, the 2nd syllable, U, is only mid-high. Many learners of Xi’an find this ambiguity in SRX annoying and there have been Human attempts in the past to adopt a comma in lieu of a period for marking this pitch pattern because they argue it would better mimic the native Xi’an spelling diacritics. However, objections recognized, the period + apostrophe solution stands. The saving grace in this ambiguity in SRX is that in the spoken language, in almost ALL rising pattens, no meaningful difference occurs in a mid-low vs. true-low pitch departure point for the rise. That is to say, it is not really necessary to mark a theoretical true-low vs. mid-low pitch because the modern language does not make that distinction except in a few minor-world dialects that you are very unlikely to encounter and some slang. When linguists make notes on dialect using SRX, true-low in a rising configuration is marked with .. as in the Xi’an youth slang term m..âman” (“crazy like a human” — this is actually a positive connotation meaning that one is able to thoroughly enjoy oneself without any inhibition). In this term the first syllable is true-low and the rise is to true-high. You will not encounter this in everyday speech. More will follow later on other patterns, but it is also important to be able to recognize the rise-to-fall pattern as in .ithl’e’a (moral; ethics; “the right choice”). The I is mid-low. THLE is mid-high. And then the final A falls to mid-low again. Double Vowels and Diphthongs Next, a few cautionary words about the long vowels indicated with macrons and the double i (ā, ē, ii, ō, ū). Making a proper vowel length distinction is a bit more necessary in Xi’an than having perfect pitch. You are more likely to be misunderstood for this linguistic faux pas than for not getting your pitch high or low enough. For example, .i (choice; selection) vs. .ii (multiply; duplicate; breed). Or, al (outgoing; external; projecting externally; depart; exit; export) vs. āl (sub conscious meditation; fugue meditation; reverie). There can also be an interplay of pitch and vowel length in getting your meaning right. a (object; tangible thing) vs. a” (fit; fit into) vs. .ā (continuation; (forward) movement). ii (light; brightness; shine) could be compared to .ii and .i above. Also germane to this comparison: ia (“epic” (holy, in the sense of ‘beyond belief’)) vs. ii’a (plant (generic term for plant); flora (juxtaposed against fauna)). These distinctions also occur in the diphthong pairs: ai*/*āi, ao*/*āo, and oa*/*ōa. (Note that ia and ea are not technically considered diphthongs by Xi’an linguists, but many Humans hear them as such.) It is best to learn these distinctions by listening to native speakers and imitating them. Finally, a note on u+a, e, i, o and the diphthongs: It is pronounced as ‘W’ in this context. Hence ua = wah, ue = weh, ui = wee, uo = woh. This remains the case when combined with other consonants. pua, nua, and kuo produce pwah, nwah, and kwoh, not poo-ah, noo-ah, or koo-oh. Similarly, ‘Y’ produces consonant clusters with other consonants. It is never a vowel by itself as it is in UEE Standard. Przeczytaj całość

  19. Variants and Modules A Guide to the New Ship Matrix Greetings Citizens! We’ve saved probably the hottest topic for the final post of this series of The Shipyard articles: Variants. Over the last 9 days we’ve covered a huge range of topics and designs all dealing with the New Ship Matrix to help inform everyone on how the internal designs are aligned with the new forward facing content and hope you all have found these useful and interesting. If it has not been done by the time this post goes live, the full update to the Ship Matrix should be available very soon for everyone to view and you’ll find that pretty much every single one of the ships listed previously has had some level of adjustment. A couple of the ships have had significant adjustments as what they were initially announced no longer fits in with other ships in that area or were equipped with items that no longer offer the best option for doing their intended role. During the course of Star Citizens production we’ve made available a wide range of ships but not every single one is a completely unique ship, often they share hull or internal parts and have been termed variants or other monikers and over time the definition has gotten a little loose and now its time to tighten it up. What Is a Variant? “A Variant is a ship that has a modified hull from its parent ship, with either physical geometry differences and/or hardpoint changes.” The key part of this is the hardpoint changes between variants, for example Origin the 300 series are variants as not only are there geometry changes but also hardpoint changes in terms of weapon amounts, sizes and thruster quantities. When talking about geometry changes simply changing the “skin” or paint does not constitute a physical change and this will be talked about further below. What Is a Module and Is It a Variant? “A module is an item attached to a ship, generally containing an entire room that can be swapped in and out. The modular item itself can contain additional or alternative hardpoints.” A ship that contains a Module that can be swapped out does not by itself merit being called a Variant unless it also meets the criteria of the variant as defined above. Even if the Module contains hardpoints that changes between them it does not count towards the main ships variant criteria. A good example of this is the Aegis Retaliator which has two Modules and has been previously available as both a Bomber and Base options. The Base option simply has nothing equipped to those Module hardpoints and can be flown as is although naturally has no functionality beyond being flyable and having 5 turrets. The Bomber version comes pre-equipped with two Torpedo Bay Modules which give the ability to store and launch up to 6 Size 9 Torpedoes. What About All the Other Things like Buk’s or Loadout Changes? One of the more confusing and often queried systems was the Battlefield Upgrade Kit or “BUK” that was announced alongside the Vanguard and its variants. The BUK system was theoretically designed to make it easy to swap between the 3 versions but for a variety of reasons wasn’t clearly explained and understood and as such we’ve simplified it: For each BUK owned this will be converted into a combo pack of the relevant Module (to fit the center room) and the relevant items (nose, turret etc) to go with that system. No more BUK’s will be offered going forward, only these combo packs. The Vanguard Sentinel and Harbinger are variants of the Vanguard warden as they contain exterior geometry differences, alongside different hardpoints. The Vanguard Hoplite is a variant of the Vanguard Warden and does not have a Module hardpoint inside to take any of the other three items, it can still mount the nose and turret items from other vanguards however. To give some examples of what is possible with these changes you can take your Vanguard Warden, remove the centre room module and provided you have the Sentinel and Harbinger combo packs, be able to attach the Harbingers centre room module and Sentinels nose and turret items. Externally this would still look like the Warden (as the geometry and skin remains the Warden) with the same Ordnance hardpoint sizes and quantities, but packing the Rocket Pod turrets of the Sentinel and internally would have the torpedo launcher of the Harbinger. Another area of confusion was the Masters of Flight series we announced with the launch of 2.6, these were offered as variants but due to the above definition no longer fall into that case, with the exception of the F7C Wildfire which as it has hardpoint changes is a variant. Any package offered where it is purely item exchanges and skin or paint changes are now referred to as “Special Editions” To summarize: Physical geometry difference and/or hardpoint changes = Variant Completely exchangeable section = Module Visual difference/item alternatives = Special Edition With this, we bring our 10-part Shipyard series on the New Ship Matrix to a close. We hope you’ve found this series of articles an informative update on the current state of Star Citizen’s overall ship design. As with all other aspects of Star Citizen’s development, work will continue from this point onward. Existing systems will continue to iterate, new systems will come online, and future updates to the information shared here will be made through our variety of communications channels, be they segments on Around the Verse, posts on Spectrum, or possibly even additional Shipyard followups. Star Citizen will continue to develop, and as it has in the past, will do so with your feedback. In the Shipyard subforum section on Spectrum, you will find 10 different threads on each of the subjects from this series. We encourage you to post your questions, share your concerns, and explore the possibilities this new information, and these new game systems, bring to mind. We’ll do our best to follow up with answers there, and use the thoughts shared to inform our decisions going forward. We hope you’re as excited about this ‘Verse we’re building as we are. We’ll see you in it. Frequently Asked Questions or: Questions We Figured You Might Have Q: Are these changes final and will my ship always be a variant/special edition? A: The majority of these changes to variants/special editions will not be going live with 3.0 as we are working out the finer details on them as ships such as the Mustang/300 are undergoing reworks and may change during their production. 22. SCU and Cargo Capacity A Guide to the New Ship Matrix Greetings Citizens! One of the exciting new features coming online with Star Citizen ALpha 3.0 and beyond is the ability for ships to ferry cargo. This presents a world of opportunity for players to pilot ships beyond combat as we hope to provide interesting alternatives and very real ways for players to earn an honest (or perhaps dishonest…) day’s pay. Buying and selling commodities from stations and transporting them across civilized space to the people who need it most (or willing to pay the most for it) we hope will encourage many players to take up a career as a Transporter. The Transporter playstyle comes with an entirely new way for players to consider which ships they want to fly. Cargo capacity becomes one of the most important considerations when judging which ship to use. Highest SCU capacities may seem like no-brainers when looking to pick the best cargo ship, but many of the larger vessels eschew defensive capabilities like thicker armor, more weapon mounts, or faster engines for that greater cargo space and can be left exposed as a result. Your decisions at this stage may ultimately lead to the great rewards, or even greater catastrophes. Cargo ships come in all shapes and sizes, but consider which trade routes are available to you before deciding. A Hull-C can carry an impressive amount of freight but its defensive options are extremely limited. Hull pilots will need to employ fighter escorts or travel in convoy in hopes to deter would-be pirates from accosting them. Ships like the Caterpillar and Starfarer offer more defense and maneuverability at the cost of cargo space. If your trade route takes you to frontier worlds where fringers play fast and loose with the law, you’re going to be thankful you have something up your sleeves to make a ship-jacker think twice. Smaller ships like the Cutlass have a decent amount of SCU capacity for short runs but more importantly, the combat acumen to go toe-to-toe with aggressors and protect its precious cargo. Knowing not only the amount of cargo that needs to be taken but the route that cargo will take should help a discerning pilot make the right choice about which transporter is right for them. Of course, the more “entrepreneurial” trader may also want to consider whether they need to avoid any… imperial entanglements. As more and more legitimate trade routes expand across the systems, so too will the number of pirates looking take what isn’t theirs. Similarly, as new colonies start to become established and will need deliveries of restricted weapons to defend themselves against marauders, so too will back-alley dealers need a steady supply of illegal stims and narcotics. Whatever the story, willing Transporters are going to needed for smuggling cargo under the nose of law enforcement from time to time. We want to make sure that gameplay is involving, fun, and more than a little bit nerve-wracking. Smugglers have a range of techniques available to them to sneak their cargo by authorities, from simply not declaring it, through making specific goods appear to be something else, and right up to masking them completely so they won’t appear on scans at all. Judging a ship for its smuggling capabilities is another consideration when it comes to picking the right ship for the right job which we’ll cover below. Commodities and Units and SCU, Oh My! When the player buys a commodity, they do so in amounts of ‘Units’. “Give me thirty units of beans” one might say. Likewise, when buying weapons, equipment and other things, they all have a numerical size attribute that governs how many ‘units’ they take up. These values are essential in figuring out how players store and transport their goods, which brings us to the Unit’s big brother: SCU. A Standard Cargo Unit, or SCU, is the universal measure for cargo storage and transport measurements. 1 SCU will be our standard box, the size of which all other boxes are measured. We wanted a universal unit so that when we say a ship has space for 100 SCU, you’ll come to know just how many containers you’ll be able to fit. More than just using 1m3, we want to make sure we can group the commodity with the container. In terms of metrics, 1 SCU comes in at 1.25m3 which is 1m3 of cargo space with 125mm protection on each side and a lid. When we have our refrigerated containers, biohazard containers, potentially livestock containers in later releases, it allows us to use that 125mm edge for extra protection or bespoke construction without losing the internal cargo space. So, as the name suggests, our cargo is universally sized, regardless of what kind of container you come across. 1 SCU can hold 100 units before its full. Since 1 SCU is the smallest sized storage container, this mean buying 1 unit of beans or 100 units of beans, the same 1 SCU of Beans will be delivered into the cargo hold. As you can probably imagine, the 101st unit of Beans that is purchased means that beans are now occupying 2 SCU in the cargo hold. The more efficient traders will want to round off their cargo to the nearest 100 if they can. It’s also worth noting that players cannot mix commodities in the same SCU Crate, so half filling 1 SCU with Beans doesn’t mean they can fill the other half with Pork and save on space, Pork will be stored in its own SCU crate. Any additional units of Pork or Beans that are bought will be added into the existing SCUs, though. This will allow players to work at fixing their inefficient cargo holds and getting the most from their space. Since weapons and equipment have a unit size attributed to them too, it allows players to buy SCU-sized Storage Crates allowing them to secure their equipment and weapons safely on the grid, rather than just leave them loosely around the ship. The Numbers Game or: My Ship’s Place in All This When it comes to deciding on a ship’s cargo capacity, we have to think about what role we see that ship occupying within the Star Citizen universe. We have entry level ships that have been given a limited amount of cargo space. The idea here is that players will be able to buy these ships cheap and once they’re making regular cargo runs with a full hold, should be able to afford going bigger. The Auroras and Reliants in these cases are designed to give players a taste of the Transporter career without breaking the bank to get involved, and should they like it they can go bigger. Other ships have cargo capacity without them being considered a ‘cargo ship’-per se. These are vessels we simply think players would expect to be able to transport a bit of cargo through. These ships are usually not taking full advantage of the space but have an area put aside for storage, like the Hornet or Mustang. Then we have the dedicated cargo ships whose cargo holds are as squared off as we can get them to be able to utilize as much space as possible while still maintaining structural integrity. We’re talking Freelancers, Starfarers, Caterpillars, and the Hull Series to name only a few. These ships have their cargo space determined a balance of cost and performance. When it comes to determining where a cargo ship sits in relation to another, we look at its speed and combat proficiency, and make a judgement about what kind of capacity fits with that kind of ship. A classic pairing would be the Freelancer opposed to the Cutlass. The Freelancer has sacrificed some combat and maneuvering ability to be able to haul more goods. Looking at the new Cutlass it can hold its own in a fight and even go on the offensive if needed, but at a cost of cargo space. We want players to make a judgement what kind of cargo ship is right for the specific job. Where will they be taking goods? How fast do they need to get there? How much is needed to fulfill the order? We’re endeavoring to make certain no two cargo ships are providing the exact same role. Even in the specialized field of cargo transportation, there can be even more specialization depending on the routes, danger and even commodities themselves that the player wishes to transport. We’re doing what we can to ensure that cargo space is also logistically sensible. Cargo squeezed into every nook and cranny of the ship might seem like a win for the player on a numerical side, but the act of loading and unloading will become a pain or even impossible with high ceilings and small doorways. The advantage of the Caterpillar with it’s huge doors will not always be structurally sound for other cargo ships. There may be instances where some ships have potentially ‘useable’ space left over. Packing for the Job You Have, and for the Job You Want Overloading a ship with more cargo is certainly something a lot of pilots have asked for, and its something we’re going to support. Because cargo will be able to be lifted and placed by hand, the player won’t need a cargo grid underneath them in order to place it, meaning they can release those commodities anywhere. We encourage players to want to store their cargo securely though, otherwise a myriad of additional challenges may await you. The more you carry, the more mass you’re trying to move around, the more adverse your ship’s efficiency is going to be. If you’re exceeding mass recommendations with loose cargo just placed wherever you’re going to throw out a ship’s interior balance and place more strain on thrusters of one side than the other. The flight system will do it’s best to compensate, but expect to burn through fuel a lot faster and risk additional component wear-and-tear than at an optimized weight. Additionally, as we develop our physics for internal behavior we are looking at room temperature, atmospherics and other forces to act upon the player and when cargo isn’t secure, these systems will act upon that, as well. Future updates will see inertial forces act upon a ship so that every bump or a bang from combat, re-entry, quantum jumps etc. will knock around anything unsecureed in the cargo hold, potentially causing it to suffer damage. While the extent of damage remains to be seen, expect some loss of integrity of the goods you’re shipping if not being stored appropriately. Also: keep an eye on any loose cargo if someone opens an airlock, too. With nothing keeping it in place, your goods will find themselves at the mercy of any decompression suffered. The True Purpose of Keeping Cargo Off Grids Smuggling is one of the next big features we will be adding to the Cargo System and is something we’re excited for players to take advantage of. Goods that will be secured in place on the cargo grid will also be considered ‘declared’ on the ship’s cargo manifest. What this means is that when players go through customs checkpoints in the future, or are encountered by law enforcement out in the space lanes, their manifest will be broadcast like a trucker handing over a clipboard, declaring what’s inside their hold that everything is above board. This will allow a player to be able to make a conscious effort not to declare an item as well, by deliberately leaving it off the grid. As highlighted beforehand, a box left in a passageway risks unbalancing a ship, over-weighing it and rattling around in the back, but once the smuggling system comes online, players have a plus side in that it’s not broadcast to others as part of the manifest. A player who wants to slip a crate full of contraband through customs will be able to do so simply by leaving it off the grid and avoiding transmitting its details to a passing police officer. Of course, the police wouldn’t be doing their job properly if they just believed what every trucker told them, so they will be scanning ships on occasion to confirm what the transporter is ferrying, whether it is on the grid or not. To combat this, we’ll be allowing smugglers to add additional technology to their SCU crates such as ‘scramblers’ that will make it harder to detect, or something we’re calling ‘spoofers’ to make a container appear as something else altogether. It’s unlikely any smuggler trickery will be able to stand up to sustained scanning forever though, so if the player finds themselves under continued scrutiny from the law, or maybe even a pirate looking to relieve them of their precious cargo, unless they have the best gear on the black market to respond with, it may be worth thinking about finding a new line of work. This won’t be a life for the meek. Frequently Asked Questions or: Questions We Figured You Might Have The Reclaimer originally sold with 2,500 SCU and now it’s listed as 360. Where did the cargo space go? A: As part of our update to the listings, we now refer to a ship’s ‘Cargo Capacity’ as its ‘usable’ cargo space for storing and transporting commodities and other items. For the Reclaimer, the majority of its internal space is dedicated exclusively to storing the salvage it has gathered. Since we don’t want to misrepresent the ship to potential buyers, we list the Reclaimer as having ‘only’ 360 SCU of Cargo Capacity. Our hope is that players looking for their next cargo ship have a much clearer understanding of the actual ‘usable’ cargo space. Players should expect the same for listings on mining ships like the Orion and Prospector too. These ships dedicate most of their previously listed SCU space to storing and processing the metals, crystals, and minerals they gather through mining operations, so players will see their ‘Cargo Capacity’ number go down compared to what it may have previously been listed at. Rest assured, the space has gone nowhere, it’s just better labelled now so players know exactly what they’re getting. 24. Other Ship Items A Guide to the New Ship Matrix Greetings Citizens! In this article, we’ll be discussing our final stops on the list of dedicated ship items displayed in the New Ship Matrix: Utility and Systems items. While it might be easy to dismiss these as being less impressive than the more flashy weapons, turrets and missiles, they are no less important to the overall operation of your spacecraft, and found far more commonly across all ships and vehicles in-game. We’ve talked previously about the various sizes of ship items like Power Plants, Coolers and Shield Generators, and while much of that still holds true, there are some key updates we want everyone to be aware of beginning with this article. We’ll begin with Utility Hardpoints. Like those previously mentioned hardpoints they have some common elements: Utility hardpoints can only take utility items. No swapping them out for weapons or missiles. Utility items have a numerical size system that allows them to be swapped and mixed between ships. Like other hardpoints, some items usable here are bespoke to the ship and would therefore be non-swappable. For some ships with utility hardpoints, you can swap out the utility items to change their functionality. While you can swap utility items out it may not always be as effective as simply using a dedicated ship designed for that cause. You could swap the Terrapin’s Radar Dish out for a Mining Laser or Tractor beam to allow basic mining or salvage, but you have no discrete way of processing it. In a situation like this, you’d likely need a second ship nearby to process things effectively. Allowing a certain level of interchangeability for groups of players to cobble together unique gameplay out of unexpected elements is something we look forward to, the idea that you’ll show us what’s truly possible in Star Citizen. An interesting example here might be a small fleet of ships including an Orion, where the Orion is great for mining but is slow and ponderous to re-align, considering that it’s tractor beam turrets that help guide rocks into its mining mechanism can still only do so much. In this situation, players with smaller ships equipping tractor beams would be able to help ferry more material either directly into the Orion or within reach of the Orion’s beams to create a more efficient operation. The remaining ship and vehicle items displayed on the ship matrix consist of the following items: Power Plants Coolers Shield Generators Fuel Intakes Radars Quantum Drives Jump Drives Computers (Formerly Avionics Motherboards or Modules) Fuel Tanks Aside from Fuel Tanks, all of these items are swappable and to ensure balance, fall under one of 5 size categories: Vehicle Small Medium Large Capital Each itemport is restricted to a single type and size, meaning you cannot put a Power Plant on a hardpoint that a Cooler occupies, nor can you swap two Small Shield Generators out for a Medium Shield Generator. The jump in output between each item type varies but it can roughly be considered to be a 3:1 ratio, as in 3 Small items give roughly the same output as one Medium. Item Grades Every swappable item in the game is assigned a grade for ease of comparison, this should be your first port of call when deciding what items to buy and swap out as it gives you a simple scale to compare against. Additional details about the individual nature of an item with be visible in the purchase screen of any vendor, but for a place to start, we provide a simple letter grade. Different grades have different values to the items: A = The best possible performance, usually has an additinal Sub Item slot. B = A good upgrade to performance, may have an additional Sub item slot. C = The standard item for most ships be default, average performance. D = Lower grade, generally makes up the NPC/AI populace, good for emergency use to get through troubles. Most ships come standard with default C grade components. SOme of the more exotic or specialized ships may come with Grade B equipment in default loadouts, which can often be seen reflected in their price. Of course, the reverse can also hold true where cheaper ships may come with D grade components by default. They’ll still work fine and get you where you wanna go, but you’ll want to consider upgrading them after a while. Item Classifications In a future 3.x patch we plan to assign every ship and every item a component class. This means players will only be able to put an item of that class into a ship that can utilize it. Military – The best overall at that item’s functionality, at the expense of emissions and cost. Civilian – The most common, wide range of behaviours to suit cost, options to approximate all other categories but not as specific. Stealth – Vastly reduced signatures/consumption at the expense of functionality. Industrial – Reliably high output and low wear, high emissions. Competition – Higher performing than military but at the expense of durability and stealth, performance over everything. At present, no ship is restricted to a single class of item, with each having at least two classes and virtually all of them featuring Civilian as an option. While this system is still in development, the idea at it’s core is to prevent players from making certain ships too powerful within respective areas. We still want there to be an enormous amount of customization available, but this system we’re still developing would do things like limit the chances of finding a Military Spec 85X or a Stealth Herald simply due to people buying the best items of that type. Sub Items Sub-Items live inside components and provide a boost to the base effectiveness in a variety of ways. Currently, they are consumable parts that will wear out much quicker than their host items themselves. Without sub-items the base item still functions as normal, but will find a small boost in performance when sub-items are installed. It’s recommended that players carry spares for longer trips as the need to swap these out over extended duration trips is likely. Not carrying spares (or not having the ability to carry spares) isn’t an impediment to base functionality, but should be seen as a continued maintenance loop necessary to provide an improved-upon and highly proficient system. Each Sub Item fits in one of three categories, each boosting a different set of stats for that item: Efficiency improves the overall effectiveness of the main item by reducing power or improving cooling performance. Protection reduces the damage being dealt to the main item by absorbing different damage types or reducing wear rate and misfire chances. Detection inhibits emissions in various spectrum from the main item or provides resistance to scanning. Sub Items can fit in many different items and are not restricted to a specific type of item, such as a Power Plant Sub Item. Frequently Asked Questions or: Questions We Figured You Might Have Q: Are Computer Blades Sub Items? A: No, they are their own stand alone item that adds or expands functionality rather than improving a baseline stat. While currently they can only be added to Computer items that may not be the only place for them in the future. Q: I’m worried about the restrictions of classes on ships and items, will it mean my ship gets nerfed? A: We’re still in the design phase of this system and therefore still working on all the edge cases we have internally. For 3.0 the default loadouts for the ships actually are the correct grades/classes that they are planned to be so the performance of those ships should change and there will be many upgrade paths even with the class restriction. We’ll provide more information on the class restriction system when we have more concrete information to share. Q: Are there other items that I can swap out on my ship? A: Absolutely, the list here is just the items that are on the ship matrix and we have many more in planning or in-game such as Scanners, Batteries and Armor.
